For the second time in two years, Southampton Town code enforcement officers raided the Westhampton home belonging to the aunt of Town Supervisor Linda Kabot, this time charging that the landowner had illegally converted several structures on the property.
Acting on a search warrant shortly after 6 a.m. on November 5, code officers said they discovered a total of 27 people living in a single-family home, garage, pool house and two sheds that were illegally converted into apartments on the 1.7-acre property on Old Country Road.
According to Town Investigator David Betts, the apartments had no certificates of occupancy and were built without proper permits. Also found were “excessive” unregistered vehicles, litter on the property and combustible material near a fireplace, according to Mr. Betts.
Marie Wilkins, the property owner, could not be immediately reached for comment. She is the aunt of Ms. Kabot, the outgoing town supervisor who lost her reelection bid on November 3—two days before the raid.
Ms. Kabot, who has not spoken to her aunt for several months, said she was aware Ms. Wilkins hired an attorney and land use consultant, possibly to seek exemption from town zoning codes because the buildings may predate some codes.
Nonetheless, Ms. Kabot supported town code enforcement. “The town enforces its laws,” Ms. Kabot said. “We all need to come into compliance.”
On Friday, children’s toys, including a playhouse and tricycle, were observed in the front and backyard of the Westhampton home, and seven cars were parked in the driveway. A person who walked inside the single-family home as a reporter approached the property did not respond to requests for comment.
This is not the first time that Ms. Wilkins was found in violation of the town code. In 2007, Ms. Wilkins was issued violations for similar housing offenses at the Westhampton property. Those charges were settled in Southampton Town Justice Court on October 15, 2008, and the court gave Ms. Wilkins a conditional discharge on the condition that she bring the property into compliance with the building and zone code by June 3, 2009.
As a result of last week’s search, code officers filed new charges against Ms. Wilkins for building two new illegal apartments. The officers discovered two basement apartments were built since officers initially searched the property in 2007.
Safety violations carry fines up to $1,000 per offense, and violations of the town’s rental law carry fines of up to $1,500 per offense, according to Ryan Horn, an aide to Ms. Kabot.

The person charged is the outgoing Supervisor's aunt -- by blood or marriage isn't specified -- and not the Supervisor, but there's an old expression about Caesar's wife that apparently Ms. Wilkins is unfamiliar with.

I'll make it easy for you: multiple choice --
1.- Were you intending an ironic observation since the convicted killer of Mrs. Kabot's grandmother was Hispanic as are those to who her aunt was allegedly renting illegally?
2.- You were just trotting out an irrelevant factoid to demonstrate your encyclopedic knowledge of Southampton Town.
Think carefully before you answer.

BTW, one of the absolute defenses against a charge of libel, is the truth of the statement -- so it would appear that what you are afraid "to spell out" is not only NOT true, but that you know it to be untrue.

You garner way too much from my statement, obviously you don't know what I'm talking about, and it doesn't matter, hun..

I also remember hearing rumors of her being put to the head of the line for her visa papers. (Now that part may or may not be tru)e. But it is a fact she is in this country illegal.
SEEMS ALL YOU DEMOCRATS HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT. Shouldnt you hold the same standard to Obama as you have spewn here to Linda. Matter of fact we should hold Obama to a higher standard.
My point is its ludacris ... more to pass any responsibility/blame merely by association.
These here are just the Linda-haters who cant give it up.

This remionds me of Hollis Warner in the bad old days of "The Bottom" in Flanders, which was so bad that Edward R. Murrow prominently included it in a CBS documentary 50 years ago,

How about Southampton Code enforcement and building department be more concerned about raiding the large house on Brushyneck Lane and Montauk Highway in Westhampton, NO BUILDING PERMIT for a 6000 square foot house, NO C.O. but the owner continues to live there?
Can I get an answer to this??!!

The reason to mention Kabot - or the question would be - did the aunt receive special treatment -- 2 years since previous raid, I remember a raid before that too, and no mention in any news source until now.
Was the disposition of the case handled the same way you or I would be treated or did Kabot intervene?
These ... more questions and others on the next episode.................

It does make a difference for SH Town and a hopeful end to its corrupt state. Or is that not related and therefore off topic and not appropriate (to you & Frank)? And it's ok for the town investigator and the former comptroller together to capitalize on her "mistakes" and continue to help to run ... more LK into the ground, innocently of course because it was after the election. (but prior to any potential trials)

go dig for dirt on ATH. I welcome it. PUBLIC FIGURES - leaders in our community - should not be associated with stuff like this and DWI busts. It's an ongoing pattern with her.
And when it happens, all you have to do is apologize for it and take some meaningful action to put a stop to it - but Linda won't do it - another troubling pattern.

So lets get back to the point.
Since you so close to the Kabot Clan maybe you can tell us what fines the aunt paid the first time and what she will be paying this time. Is she now going to stop being a SLUM LORD ??

(and last, but not least....being on the town board for as many years and supervisor...Linda Kabot should have some accountability with the actions of her family...it seems that maybe the houses would not have continued for so many years if she was not working in town hall...but, than again..$$$ in this town seems to get what it wants.)
One last note...David Betts has been one of the few that have ... more done their job for the citizens of this community...anyone that has a problem with him is most likely breaking the law.

You're right, I would think that it would be the case that the former comptroller does have a problem with Mr. Betts now.
