Hampton Bays runners Nicole Noa and Sarah Reed competed in the New York State Cross Country Championships in Plattsburgh over the weekend and finished third and fourth, respectively, among runners in the Class C race from Suffolk County. Noa finished in 21:51 and Reed was close behind in 21:53.

Hampton Bays head coach Dave Oakley said he was proud of the way his sophomore runners performed.

“They did very well,” he said. “Their times were excellent.”

Oakley said the times for both runners were right around their best times of the year. He said the conditions were tough due to bad weather and the fact that the girls’ Class C race was the last race of the day, meaning the course was in bad shape by then. Oakley did say that the course was easier than the course at Sunken Meadow, where the team runs most of its dual meets during the regular season.

“There weren’t any major hills like Sunken Meadow, but there were a lot of sharp turns,” he said. “The conditions were very wet and muddy and the girls were in the last race, so it was pretty sloppy.”

Lady Baymen Melissa Gregory and August Thilberg had also qualified for the state meet, but could not compete. Gregory had a leg injury and Thilberg was sick.

Hampton Bays should field a strong team against next year. Gregory will graduate, along with Maraya Ferreira, Julia King, Meridythe Donnan and Judith Mesa. But Thilberg, Noa and Reed will all be back to lead the team.
