Westhampton Beach

Members of the Key Club at Westhampton Beach High school spent two weeks last month making care packages for servicemen and servicewomen in our area as a part of “Operation Shoebox,” a program that collects letters, donations and care packages for military members.

The Key Club collected $142 in donations and more than 3,000 individual items such as candy, granola bars, gum, cards, toiletry items, batteries and more for the troops. High school librarian Patty Merendino, whose son is now enlisted, helped initiate the school’s involvement with Operation Shoebox. She will also ship the donated items to troops now serving overseas at her own expense.

In observance of Veterans Day, students at Westhampton Beach Elementary School paid tribute to veterans at a school assembly featuring music from the school’s band. Members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing Honor Guard led the opening ceremony. The event featured a variety of guest speakers.

The Westhampton Beach Parent Teacher Organization will host a Holiday Fair on Saturday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the high school on Lilac Road.

All schools in the district will be closed on Wednesday, November 25, Thursday, November 26, and Friday, November 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.
