Two men were stabbed during a melee at 75 Main in Southampton Village early Sunday morning, though no arrests have been made yet, Southampton Village Police said Wednesday.

About 20 people were fighting in small groups inside and outside of the popular bar at around 3 a.m., and two 27-year-old men were injured in the mayhem, according to Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison. One of the men, who is from Brooklyn and has also lived in Bridgehampton, was taken to Southampton Hospital and later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of a stab wound from a box-cutter that damaged a tendon in his elbow. The man required plastic surgery, Det. Sgt. Lamison said.

The other victim, who is from North Sea, suffered a 12-inch-long stab wound on his lower body, also from a box cutter, while he was trying to break up one of the fights, police reported. He was treated at Southampton Hospital.

The victims were not fighting against each other, Det. Sgt. Lamison explained. They were involved in smaller, separate fights within the larger brawl.

The victim from Brooklyn was attacked, but he will not identify his assailant, Village Police said.

The police are actively investigating the incident but have been faced with uncooperative witnesses, Det. Sgt. Lamison said. The people involved in the fight do not want to discuss what happened because they want to resolve the issues on their own terms—without the help of police. “That’s the street mentality,” he said.

Det. Sgt. Lamison dismissed rumors that the fight was related to any kind of long-standing feud between factions from area neighborhoods. He did say that the influence of alcohol and drugs might have fueled the bad blood that caused the brawl in the crowded bar, which was packed with 60 to 70 people. “I would say they were not in their right mind and that alcohol and or drugs played its role,” he said.

He added that the fight was not related to another altercation at Featherstones on Jobs Lane that occurred on November 7.

Police are urging anyone who was at 75 Main on Saturday night or early Sunday morning to contact them at 283-0083.
