Canio’s will celebrate its 10th anniversary under the direction of Maryann Calendrille and Kathryn Szoka on Friday, November 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. with the launching of the shop’s new not-for-profit, Canio’s Cultural Café.

The new venture is aimed at expanding on the rich cultural series of events already happening at Canio’s Books, and will ensure continued community programming into the future, the store’s owners said.

Ms. Szoka and Ms. Calendrille envision Canio’s Culture Café as a moveable feast of ideas, according to a press release they issued recently, and “while they won’t exactly be serving meals, they will be serving interesting ideas.”

The mission of Canio’s Cultural Café is to support and engender community interest in the cultural arts, with an emphasis on literature, visual arts, and current events. It will accomplish this by hosting lectures, workshops, seminars and other public forums that will include a diversity of artists and writers who might not otherwise be heard, the press release said.

The public is invited to celebrate the past and the future of Canio’s at the launch on Friday. A suggested donation of $25 to Canio’s Cultural Café is requested.

They don't participate in the local Chamber meetings and they do little if anything for the children of Sag Harbor compared to the likes of the library, Bay Street and more. Disconnect further evident if you ever read the Maryann's column which seems like ... more

Hi Real Local: I love Cannio's but I am surprised that they don't participate in community issues. Can this be an effort to invite them to be more active rather than assume they are not interested?

That's a valid point MaryB, thank you. I guess this could be considered a way of reaching out to the community.
I guess I considered events sponsored in a retail outlet, especially ones they are asking the community to help pay for, aren't really things that their business is doing for their community. If Bookhampton has a book signing and reading, is that considered something they are doing for their community? I consider it just a means of driving people to their store.

Either way, ... more
