Music For Montauk will present “Six Decades of the Duke,” a musical biography of Duke Ellington from the 1920s to the 1970s, on Saturday, December 5, at 7 p.m. at the Montauk School. The performance, which is free and open to the public will be given by the Dick Lowenthal Jazz Orchestra, consisting of 14 musicians as in the “Big Band” format.

Duke Ellington is one of the most significant figures in American jazz and achieved success as a composer, bandleader, pianist and arranger. More than 30 years after his death, his music continues to be acclaimed by both critics and audiences.

The program will include “Satin Doll,” “Take the A Train,” “Mood Indigo” and other familiar favorites. Newly discovered arrangements will be performed, including Mr. Ellington’s arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue” and a polka he wrote called “Klop.” There will also be some “period” pieces from the 1920s and 1930s.

Music For Montauk is an organization of Montauk and East End residents that presents a series of free, high quality musical performances for the Montauk community and its neighboring villages.
