Hakamé. Greetings from Shinnecock.

Today we will meet at the flagpole at 5:30 p.m. for our third annual tree lighting ceremony. Shinnecock Women’s Helping Hands will provide hot cocoa and cookies, Shinnecock Indian Education will provide holiday tunes and Santa is slated to make a special appearance.

November is Native American Heritage Month and to honor the occasion, last Tuesday Shinnecock youth put on two presentations at Southampton High School. We were proud to see that all of our youth from the intermediate and high school participated. The children, some dressed in full regalia, danced a grand entry and continued with a Robin and a Stomp Dance. In addition, Richard “Juni” Wingfield, community liaison for Southampton schools, was honored by the Shinnecock Indian Nation for his work with all communities in working to break down barriers to diversity. Juni was presented with a framed print of Crow artist Bunky Echo-Hawk’s “Barack Black Eagle: He Who Helps People Throughout the Land.”

For those who missed Allison “Alli” Joseph’s “Seventh Generation Stories” talk on researching family genealogy at Rogers Memorial Library yesterday, SEA-TV will be airing the discussion in full. Visit Town.Southampton.ny.us to view the network’s program schedule.

All potential Miss Shinnecock 2010 Pageant contestants must hand in their applications by Monday, December 7. Applications can be dropped off at Indian Education during regular after-school hours. For its next fund-raiser, the Miss Shinnecock Pageant Committee will hold a Holiday Craft Bazaar on Saturday, December 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Shinnecock Community Center. Craft vendors and anyone else interested in showcasing their holiday treasures, should contact Nishwé Williams at 682-2902, or e-mail MissShinnecockTeen@gmail.com to sign up for a table at a cost of $25.

ARF, the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, will offer a free rabies clinic for cats, dogs and ferrets on Tuesday, December 8, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Shinnecock Community Center. All dogs must be leashed and cats and ferrets must be in carriers. In addition, ARF will sponsor a cat and dog food pantry from 5 to 6 p.m. Call ARF at 537-0400, extension 202, for more information.

The Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum and North Sea Poetry Scene will present a poetry reading by Suffolk County Poet Laureate Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan on Friday, December 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the museum. A silent auction of several crafted pieces and a reception will follow. Admission is $5. Also that weekend, the museum will hold its annual Winter Arts and Crafts Festival. Details to come next week.

And while you’re marking your calendar, note that the Shinnecock Revival Center will host a “Holiday Love Feast” on Saturday, December 19, from 6 to 10 p.m., at the Shinnecock Indian Outpost Warehouse. In addition to a feast of food and brotherly love, the event promises great music, entertainment, lots of door prizes, toys for the kids and fun for the entire family! Tickets are $15.
