As the menorahs are lit celebrating the festival of lights, I wish my readers of the Jewish faith a very happy and healthy Hanukkah!
Well, the bad news is that due to last Saturday’s inclement weather, the annual tree lighting ceremony was cancelled. The good news though is that this weekend there will be two fantastic holiday events in East Quogue.
Under a brightly lit and twinkling Christmas tree, members of our East Quogue Elementary School chorus and Girl Scouts will perform in a holiday caroling ceremony. This wonderful family event, sponsored by our East Quogue Beautification Committee, will be held this Saturday, December 12, at 4 p.m., on the Village Green. There will be candy canes and hot chocolate for all and, please, keep your fingers crossed for fair skies.
And then on Sunday, December 13, Santa arrives at 2 p.m. aboard a great big East Quogue Fire Department fire truck! Santa’s elves will be waiting for him at Ronnie’s Barn at the New Moon Café on Main Street where there will be lots of goodies and pictures for all. Our East Quogue Chamber of Commerce sponsors this charming and traditional holiday event every year.
Speaking of our chamber, have you seen our beautiful Main Street? Well, she’s all aglow in her holiday finery and Christmas cheer thanks to the dedicated members of this wonderful organization. Please show your appreciation for all that our chamber does for our hamlet by visiting the shops on Main Street for all of your holiday needs.
Very special thanks go to Steve Forte, of Hampton Nursery, for “thinking spring!” Once again Steve has donated plants and flowers to beautify our little hamlet. This time, more than 1,000 bulbs were planted along downtown Main Street. His helpers were 8-year-olds Aidan Cumisky, Christian Forte and Daniel Thompson; 10-year-olds Ryan Cumisky and Stephen Forte Jr.; and preschooler Jack Cumisky. Thanks, guys, for working in the pouring rain to make East Quogue beautiful for 2010!
Very special wishes go out to all of the dedicated members of our East Quogue Fire Department who celebrate their birthdays this month. Bill Swasey blows out his candles this Friday, December 11. Art Little celebrates on Friday, December 18. And Bill Potter’s special day is Saturday, December 19.
Get well wishes for a speedy recovery are being sent to Bruce Carter of Vail Avenue.
If you know of someone who could use a little Christmas cheer this holiday season, please contact the East Quogue Adopt-a-Family Committee. All requests will be kept confidential. We are also in need of donations. Checks and requests for aid can be sent to Lois and Bob Holley at P.O. Box 71, East Quogue, NY 11942. Money and gift cards can be dropped off at Mendenhall Fuel, 575 Montauk Highway. I am also on the committee and can be contacted at the addresses listed above.
Additionally, donation jars will be available at the stores on Main Street and the East Quogue Chamber of Commerce will have two donation bins in place during Santa’s stopover this Sunday at Ronnie’s Barn at the New Moon Café.
Just a reminder that Christmas trees, wreaths and roping are still available for all of your holiday needs at the East Quogue Firehouse on Montauk Highway. Please support this important fund-raiser.
Members of the Twin Forks Chapter of the Compassionate Friends, a national self-help support organization for families grieving the death of a child, will be holding their annual Worldwide Candle Lighting Service this Sunday, December 13, at 7 p.m., at the East Quogue United Methodist Church on Montauk Highway. All are welcome. For more information, please call Mary Casey at 298-5043.
If you have a Stop & Shop card, here is your chance to do something for our East Quogue students. Type the words “My Stop & Shop” in a search engine and sign up for the “A+ bonus bucks” program. With each purchase, additional bonus points accrue for the schools of your choice. This program costs you nothing and your points program will remain the same. Our schools will surely appreciate your help.
