Eastport South Manor girls basketball head coach Steve Giacolone was looking for his team to bounce back after its 51-35 non-league loss at Center Moriches on Friday night and it did so with a 49-22 non-league victory at Westhampton Beach on Monday night.

Although scores do not always tell the story, for ESM, the scores of the past two games do. Against Center Moriches (League VII), the Lady Sharks fell behind quickly as the Lady Red Devils used its quick, pressure defense to create turnovers. By the time ESM could make any type of run, the game was already out of reach.

“We knew that they would come out and pressure us right away and they did a very good job,” Giacolone said. “They’re a very talented team. I know they’re small in numbers, but they all can play, they’re all quick, they all play hard. But I was happy with how we competed. We never gave up. I thought we fought hard. We took some strides.”

ESM senior Alex Marshall led ESM against Center Moriches with 18 points and two rebounds while senior Amanda Brisson had nine points and two rebounds.

Against Westhampton Beach (League VI), the Lady Sharks dictated the tempo of the game from the opening tip off with a full court press, which made it very difficult for the young Lady Hurricanes to create any type of offense. Giacolone said his team wanted to play a bit more aggressive defense after its loss to Center Moriches.

“We feel we’re a good team, we just didn’t really play as well as we had liked against Center,” Giacolone said after Monday’s game. “Tonight, we kind of did some things that I thought were positive.”

Brisson had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals while Marshall had nine points and two rebounds. ESM sophomore Stephanie Gratto came off the bench to chip in seven points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Westhampton Beach was coming off a 34-22 non-league victory at Southold (League VIII) on Friday night, its first game of the season. Westhampton Beach sophomore Haley Laube had 12 points and four rebounds while sophomore Kristen Polan had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

ESM hosted Brentwood (League I) in a non-league game on Wednesday night and will visit Hampton Bays (League VII) in another non-league game on Monday night at 6 p.m. The Lady Sharks will have their first League IV game on Thursday, December 17, at Half Hollow Hills West at 6 p.m.

Westhampton Beach will be holding the Larry Makransky Holiday Tournament this weekend at the high school. The first game of the tournament is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday evening. The Lady Hurricanes will play their first League VI game of the season on Tuesday, December 15, at Amityville at 4:30 p.m. then come home to host East Hampton on Thursday, December 17, at 6:15 p.m.
