“Students View American Landscapes,” an extension of the Parrish Art Museum’s long-standing School Art Festival in Southampton, will open with a Parrish Winter Festival “Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz” celebration and reception on Saturday, December 12, at 2 p.m., and will remain on view through January 10.
In preparation for the exhibition, students and teachers from neighboring schools were invited to view the museum’s fall exhibition, “American Landscapes: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum,” and then explore the media, methods, subjects, and themes of that exhibition through works of their own. Selections from the “American Landscapes” exhibition will be displayed in tandem with student work, ranging from prekindergarten through grade 12.
The exhibition’s opening reception coincides with the Parrish’s Winter Festival, which is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. The festival will open with “Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz,” an interactive show in which Hayes Greenfield and his band jazz up familiar songs, engaging the audience in a creative, participatory journey of call-and-response, scatting, singing, conducting, interpretive sound, dance, and just plain old beboppin’.
Everyone gets a chance to perform and become part of the ensemble. New York Magazine has called Mr. Greenfield’s Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz an “innovative, interactive kid-size journey into the world of bebop.” Newsday declared it to be “where jazz is way cool!”
The opening reception for “Students View American Landscapes” will follow the performance with refreshments, Transformation Face Painting by Agostino Arts, and an opportunity to view the exhibition. The Winter Festival and opening reception are free. No advance registration is required.
Participating schools in “Students View American Landscapes” include Bellport High School, Bridgehampton Childcare and Recreation Center, Bridgehampton High School, The Children’s School, Cutchogue East Elementary School, East Hampton High School, East Quogue Elementary School, Greenport High School, Hampton Bays Elementary School, Hampton Bays Middle School, Mattituck Junior/Senior High School, Suffolk County Homeschoolers, Mt. Sinai High School, New Suffolk Elementary School, Our Lady of Mercy Regional School, Raynor Country Day School, Riverhead High School, Ross School, Tuckahoe School, Sag Harbor Elementary School, Southampton Elementary School, Southampton Intermediate School, Southampton High School, Southampton Montessori School, Southold Jr./Sr. High School, Westhampton Beach High School, and William Floyd High School.
“Students View American Landscapes” and related educational programming are made possible, in part, with generous support from Bridgehampton National Bank and Southampton Rotary Club.
Parrish programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the property taxpayers of Southampton School District and Tuckahoe Common School District.
