Bridgehampton Fire Commissioner John Muse sailed to victory in the commissioner election held Tuesday night, despite having faced an unexpected write-in challenger, John Healey of Wainscott.

According to Bridgehampton Fire District Secretary Charles Butler, Mr. Muse garnered 76 votes, while Mr. Healey got 27 votes.

“I did it the old-fashioned way,” Mr. Muse said, adding that he was not surprised by his win.

Mr. Muse, an emergency medical technician, has been a fire commissioner in Bridgehampton for the last six years. He was expecting an uneventful, single-candidate race since November, but then faced the write-in challenger on Monday.

Mr. Healey, who lives in Wainscott and is currently the chief of the Bridgehampton Fire Department, circulated e-mails as part of a write-in campaign to secure the commissioner spot. On Tuesday, Mr. Healey said he decided to run on Monday because, over the weekend, numerous community and fire department members urged him to.

“They asked me if they wrote me in, would I accept,” Mr. Healey said, adding that he made a final decision on the matter Monday morning.

Fire commissioners take care of the financial side of the fire department, Mr. Muse explained. The five commissioners for the Bridgehampton Fire Department manage the tax money the department receives from Southampton Town and use it to maintain equipment, he said.

A proposition to begin a fund for a new, larger firehouse for the Bridgehampton Fire Department was also approved by voters, Mr. Butler said. The proposition will allow the commissioners to move money from one fund to another to put towards a larger firehouse, Mr. Muse said. There were 74 people in favor of the proposition, and 14 who voted against it, Mr. Butler said.

In North Sea, Fire Commissioner Greg Robins was reelected to his seat with 26 votes, said fellow fire commissioner Ed DiMonda. He was running unopposed.

Southampton Fire Commissioner David Price was also reelected with a total of 15 votes, said district secretary Kristin White. He also ran unopposed.
