For your consideration this week: the modernization of the holidays. LED lights, 3-D menorahs made of scrap metal and sleek brown-and-blue striped Christmas stockings? Well, whatever gets you in the holiday spirit.
Just keep my stocking red, my eggnog strong and my non-plastic dreidel spinning!
Show off your take on tradition. Westhampton Beach residents and business owners are invited to participate in the village’s eighth annual Holiday Lighting Contest. Judging will take place this Friday, December 18. Residents and business owners must have their holiday lights turned on between 5 and 10 p.m. that night. The Hampton Synagogue will offer insight into a storied Jewish tradition with “Torah Talk: The Meaning of Hanukkah in 2009,” on Thursday, December 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the temple on Sunset Avenue in Westhampton Beach. All are welcome. Questions? Call 288-0534.
There’s still time. Saint Mark’s Bright Beginnings Preschool of Westhampton Beach will collect toys for donation to The Retreat of East Hampton and other various Adopt-A-Family programs through Saturday, December 19. For additional information, call 288-3310.
Also, Pastor Chevrolet on Montauk Highway in Westhampton is still accepting new, unwrapped toys for its Toys for Tots program through Wednesday, December 23. Stop by and drop off your donation or schedule a pick-up at home. For additional information, call 288-4400.
The Free Film at Noon series continues on Friday, December 18, with a screening of “Public Enemies.” All are welcome to attend. For additional information on library events, including the screening location for the film, call 288-3335, ext. 10.
The reels keep turning with “Santa and A Movie” featuring “Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed In At the House of Mouse” on Saturday, December 19, at 11 a.m., at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Main Street. Tickets are free and offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so get to the theater early. For further details, call 288-1500.
For a quick veggie-and-fruit fix, head to the Winter Farmers Market in the alleyway between Shock Ice Cream and Sydney’s on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. The market will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday through March 27.
St. Mark’s Church Sunday School and Youth Group presents the Christmas pageant “Bethlehem Speaks” on Sunday, December 20, at 10 a.m., at the church on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. The church also needs nonperishable food donations for local food pantries, so bring along a can or two. All are welcome. For additional information, call 288-2111.
The Knights of Columbus, Joseph Slomski Council’s annual Christmas Wreath Sale continues every Saturday and Sunday this month immediately following mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in Quiogue. Wreaths are $20 each or $35 for two, $50 for three or $65 for four. As always, proceeds help to finance the Knights and their continued participation in community activities and funding of scholarships. Call 288-1423 if you need more details.
Numerous Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services will be held throughout the area this week.
The Westhampton United Methodist Church on Montauk Highway will offer a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 24.
Beach United Methodist Church on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach will also hold its Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7:30 p.m. on December 24.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Main Street will offer Christmas Eve family Eucharist services at 4:30 p.m., followed by a candlelight festival at 10 p.m. on December 24. Christmas Day service will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 25.
Westhampton Presbyterian Church on Old Meeting House Road will have Christmas Eve candlelight services and carols beginning at 5 p.m. on December 24, with communion services beginning at 11 p.m. in the Quogue Chapel on Quogue Street.
And lastly, the Eastport Bible Church on Montauk Highway has orchestrated a live nativity, which will be on display from 4 to 6:50 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with services to follow at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
And a little further ahead, Pack 1 of the Cub Scouts of America, which includes young men from Westhampton Beach, Westhampton, Speonk and Remsenburg, will hold its annual Pinewood Derby at Westhampton Beach High School on Lilac Road on Sunday, January 24, at 1 p.m. All former Scouts are invited to participate in a special race. The Holiday and Winter Art Exhibit will remain on display through January at Coldwell Banker Prestigious Properties on Main Street in Westhampton Beach.
