An 81-year-old East Quogue man was killed and four people were injured in a car accident in Center Moriches on Monday afternoon.
According to Suffolk County Police, Edward Goehring was a passenger in a 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Florence Soah, 67, of Hampton Bays, when the car was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Johanna Forney, 17, of Eastport at about 3 p.m. near the intersection of Frowein Road and Railroad Avenue.
Ms. Soah was driving west on Frowein Road and attempted to make a left turn onto Railroad Avenue when the Blazer struck the passenger side of Ms. Soah’s car, police said.
Mr. Goehring was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Ms. Forney, two 15-year-old passengers in her vehicle and Ms. Soah were all transported by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where they were listed in stable condition. Mr. Goehring was the only passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, according to police.
Detective Sergeant John Best of the Suffolk County Police Department’s 7th Squad said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. No charges were filed, he said.
While Det. Sgt. Best said the investigation is still ongoing, he noted that a passenger in a vehicle that was not involved in the accident said Ms. Soah might have made a sudden turn.
“We do have a witness account that as [Ms. Soah] approached the intersection, it appeared that she was indecisive about whether she wanted to turn left or right, and then subsequently made a left turn,” Det. Sgt. Best said.
Detective Lieutenant Gail Marrero of the 7th Squad said it was unclear what injuries Mr. Goehring died from, but does not believe they were exacerbated by not wearing a seat belt. “We won’t know until we get the medical examiner’s report,” Det. Lt. Marrero said.
Traffic was stalled in Center Moriches between 3 and 6:50 p.m. on Monday, according to Det. Lt. Marrero.
Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact the 7th Squad at 852-8752, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.
