We thought at first how wonderful it would be to have a white “Christmas on the Green,” but, alas, it was not to be. It was simply too white and there was too much snow on Sunday to even get past the end of the driveway, let alone into the downtown area.
Similarly, the ceremony to dedicate the pergola built to honor the memory of Dale Stevens and Tom Maran had to be postponed. We look forward to this being rescheduled sometime in the near future. Both Dale and Tom were integral members of the Water Mill Community Club, and the beautiful new addition to the grounds of the tennis house is a fitting tribute to these two men who will long live in the memories of so many in Water Mill.
With Christmas Eve upon us, though, our thoughts turn to the holiday celebrations ahead. Santa is expected to make his sneaky appearance at about a billion homes in the next 24 hours, and our own little sugarplums will wake to find treats of all kinds under the tree on Christmas morning.
Sunday’s blizzard may have put some of us behind in our Christmas shopping, so if you need a last minute gift, why not just write up a little card noting that you’re purchasing a brick at the Water Mill Museum in the recipient’s honor? Then, of course, don’t forget to follow through by contacting the museum to make the purchase; a brick costs $70. Details are available at watermillmuseum.org, or call Faye Andreasen at 283-4778.
Another excellent last minute gift could be a membership to the Water Mill Community Club. If you know a young family with children, the $45 membership fee is a bargain considering all the wonderful activities offered throughout the year. Go to watermillcommunityclub.org for membership information.
We hear that Dave Hawke’s Shell station has reopened after eight weeks of renovation. From what we can see, there are plenty of pumps now, which should make a summer fill-up much less of an ordeal, and the mini-mart apparently is something to behold. We hope they will stock the right variety of beer and ice cream.
As we write this column, we are still digging out, and having ventured out once early on Monday morning, we are not looking forward to the required ventures—work comes to mind—that will put us again on the treacherous roads, many of which are blocked with drifting snow just minutes after a plow comes through. It makes us wonder where all the snow fencing is, that, once upon a time, was installed on roads that even a small snowfall can render impassable.
All the snow does put us even more in the holiday spirit. We wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday, and as this is the last column of the year, wishes for a prosperous and healthy new year are also in order.
