An East Quogue man remains hospitalized this week, eight days after he was struck by a car while crossing Montauk Highway in Speonk.

Southampton Town Police said John W. Reichert Jr., 50, was hit at around 9:45 p.m. on December 27 while crossing the street near 216 Montauk Highway by a 2001 Suzuki being driven by 24-year-old Wilson Hernandez of Westhampton. Police said Mr. Hernandez was traveling east on Montauk Highway when Mr. Reichert, who was running south, crossed in front of his vehicle.

Mr. Reichert was unconscious when police arrived at the scene, and his head was bleeding severely, according to a report of the accident. After being treated by the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance, Mr. Reichert was taken to nearby Eastport Elementary School and airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

On Monday, Mr. Reichert was still hospitalized and in stable condition, according to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Members of Mr. Reichert’s family could not be reached this week.

Mr. Hernandez was charged with driving without a license, a violation, according to Town Police.

Twenty-five firefighters with the Eastport Fire Department responded to the scene and a section of Montauk Highway was closed for about 30 minutes, according to fire officials.

Southampton Town Police detectives are still investigating and ask that anyone who witnessed the accident call 702-2230.
