Bridgehampton School
Students in the first through third grades are celebrating the upcoming Winter Olympics. They have simulated the carrying of the Olympic torch from country to country by passing the torch from class to class throughout the school district and competed in different events and ceremonies with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded.
The senior class is holding a chicken dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, February 12, at the Bridgehampton Community House to raise funds for its class trip to Disney World’s Grad Night celebration at the end of April. Tickets may be purchased for $15 at the door or by calling the school.
Environmental Design students visited the Bridgehampton Historical Society to view an exhibition of photographs of the town during the Depression era. Afterward, they photographed many buildings in town to include in their three-dimensional SketchUp models, which will be uploaded to Google Earth in the spring.
Our Lady of the Hamptons
Seventh-grader Jacqueline Minogue of Southampton and fifth-grader Madison O’Connor of Hampton Bays were named the first-place winners of the annual Frank DiBartolo Oratorical Competition. Second-place awards were given to Isabella Sorgi and Jessica Penna, with third going to William Allan and Olivia Wynne.
Two hundred grandparents attended the Grandparents Tea, hosted by the Hamptones and the school administration. During Catholic Schools Week, the fourth grade class visited with and served lunch to the clients of Bridgehampton Nutrition Center. The second grade spearheaded a Soup-er Bowl Drive to provide canned and dried soups to the Human Resources program.
Sag Harbor Elementary
Continuing an annual tradition, the school will hold its Caribbean Day on Friday, February 12. Students and staff are encouraged to come in island attire for dancing to the steel band music of Vivian and the Merry Makers starting at 1:50 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend.
On Sunday, March 7, at 1 p.m., in the Pierson gymnasium, the Sag Harbor Parenting Center is sponsoring a fun afternoon of “Trick Hoops and Alley Oops!” Members of the Sag Harbor School District will form an All-Star team to play against the Harlem Wizards.
There will be an orientation night for parents of next year’s kindergartners on Thursday, March 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
This week’s fifth grade announcers are Mackenzie Benbenek and Claire Farry.
Hayground School
An African-American Read In was held on Thursday. The day was focused on reading and discussing books about and by people of color. Carol Spencer, owner of Diaspora Books in Sag Harbor, was on hand with a wide variety of books, notepaper and other items that celebrated writers, stories and people of color.
Tuckahoe School
Eighth grade students are playing the stock market game while exploring the causes of the Great Depression and discussing the current economic situation. Students invest in well-known companies and monitor stock prices daily.
Students in Stephanie Neill’s eighth grade class are working with William Chandler and Rose Dios from SUNY Stony Brook Southampton. Each student is writing a play. A selected play will be performed on March 20 at the college.
Ross Lower School
Students made exciting global connections on February 3 using Skype. The first- through fourth-graders spoke to children in Zimbabwe, part of a larger organization known as ZimKids that the school has worked closely with over the years.
In track, Charles Lehner ran 9:84 in the 55-meter hurdles and Viktor Seibert ran 5:37 in the 1600-meter race. They qualified for the Suffolk County Small Schools Championship, which was held on February 4 at Suffolk County Community College West.
Stella Maris Regional School
Thursday was Sports Day, and in the annual seventh grade vs. teachers volleyball game, the students chalked up a win. The teachers rallied in their game against the eighth-graders and won that competition.
