I am not a big fan of 24/7 availability and, with the exception of my sons, no one has my cell phone number. I have always treasured my quiet moments.

That being said, I finally joined Facebook—at the “request” of the publisher of my soon-to-be-released book. I haven’t quite got the hang of it yet and it’s still a little overwhelming with its “walls” and little chat circles, but I think it’s going to be fun. My son Michael immediately posted an “M-OMG” message for his friends; The translation: “My ‘Mom, Oh My God,’ is on Facebook!” And then I received a neat picture and message from Bobby so ...

Last Sunday, February 7, was extra-super for the Samsons! Taylor, a senior at Westhampton Beach High School, turned 18 and celebrated with her Mom and Dad, Terri and Ed. Her parents want her to know “how very proud they are of her!” Happy birthday, Taylor!

Lots of very special birthday wishes are being sent to Kerri Pazera from her loving family. Her husband, Peter, hopes that “all of her wishes come true.” And her kids, Brianna, Nick, Owen and Jack, want her to know that: “We love you Mom!” And even Nikko sends a great big woof! Kerri blew out her candles on Wednesday, February 3.

Congratulations to Kevin Benitez who was named to the dean’s list at Fairfield University in Connecticut for the fall semester. Kevin, a junior, is enrolled in the Charles F. Dolan School of Business.

Kurt Berglin was named to the dean’s list at Marist College for the fall semester. A member of the class of 2010, Kurt is majoring in fine arts and studio. Congratulations!

It is not too late to get your copy of the East Quogue Historical Society’s “History of East Quogue.” There are still three books left and they cost $20 each. Also available for purchase are Cat’s Meow wooden replicas of the old East Quogue School House, the Walker House and the East Quogue United Methodist Church. Are you looking for something fun to do with your kids for Valentine’s Day? Then bring them to the Nature Center at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge this Saturday, February 13, at 2 p.m., to meet the “Sweetheart Owl.” Children ages 5 through 11 can learn all about this distinctive owl with the heart-shaped facial disc. Kids will also make a craft to give to their special valentine! Reservations are required for this free program. Call 653-4771 for details.

For an interesting winter’s evening stop by the Quogue Library on Saturday, February 20, and attend the monthly Film Feast. This month’s featured film will be “Strayed 2003,” a French film with English subtitles that stars Emmanuelle Béart and Gaspard Ulliel. The feast begins at 6:30 p.m. and the film at 7:15 p.m. Price of admission is a beverage and a dish that serves at least six. Call the library at 653-4224, ext. 4, to register.

Save the date! The seventh annual Red Dress Dinner for heart health awareness will take place at 230 Elm (formerly the Southampton Polish Hall) on Friday, March 5, from 6:30 until 11:30 p.m. Paul Mahos and the New Life Crisis Band will be performing at this “women only” event. Tickets are $55 each if purchased before Monday, February 15; After that, they cost $60. The cost includes cocktails, dinner, coffee and dessert. Remsenburg’s “Captain Bob” Monette is still bravely fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease. On Saturday, March 6, at 7 p.m., his family, friends and neighbors will host a fund-raiser at Casey’s on Montauk Highway in Westhampton Beach. The Filthy Crickets will entertain and there will be a cash bar, Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.
