Five local children were recognized for their basketball prowess after participating in the Elks Lodge National Hoop Shoot competition. Riley Tupper of Hampton Bays and Elijah Wingfield of Southampton finished first in the 8-to-9-year-old age groups of the East District competition and moved on to the state portion of the competition, which will take place on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, New York. Tupper was the champion in the girls division while Wingfield won the boys division.

Alexis Fotopoulos of Hampton Bays was second in the 10-to-11 age group for girls and Jack Pederson was second in the same age group for boys. Lisa Marie Klinge was third in the 12-to-13 age group.

The Hoop Shoot competition is a free-throw shooting contest open to boys and girls age 8 to 13. Six national champions are named—one boy and one girl in each of three categories, ages 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. The winners each receive a trophy and their names are inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
