So, that’s it. Another football season has come and gone, and this year’s Super Bowl champs are the New Orleans Saints. I enjoyed watching them take control and win the big one. I have said it since before the playoffs began: nobody is going to stop the Saints this year—and nobody did.
It was a great game, with some great commercials, too. And The Who performed at halftime ... I mean, who could ask for anything more? For some of us, it is time to start thinking about NASCAR and there isn’t much time to start revving our engines as the Daytona 500 is this Sunday! I’m looking forward to a great season of racing.
Congratulations to Michael Horn and Pamela Wells, both of Riverhead, who were recently named to the dean’s lists at their respective colleges. Michael attends Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts, and Pamela is a student at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. Way to go, guys!
Hurry and reserve your ticket to freeze your butt off! Well, it’s for a good cause, so don’t shy away. The third annual Peconic Plunge will be held on Saturday, February 27, at 11 a.m., at Veterans Park on Bay Avenue in Mattituck. The icy dip will raise money for the Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach Program that assists the homeless on both the North and South forks.
Plungers are invited to attend a “warming up” party right after the event at the Peconic Community Council Clubhouse on East Main Street in Riverhead, where prizes will be awarded for the most sponsorships raised in several categories. Entry and sponsorship forms are available at the clubhouse, or you can obtain more information by calling 727-6831 or visiting pccouncil.org.
Good luck to those of you who are planning on braving the icy cold. Perhaps you will get lucky and we will get a spring-like day.
There is still time for you to get your H1N1 flu shot this season. Peconic Bay Medical Center is holding a free flu shot clinic on Monday, February 22, in the Employee Health Center that is located on the Riverhead hospital’s third floor. Clinic hours are 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. You must call 548-6080 to make an appointment if you plan on taking advantage of this free clinic.
The next meeting of the Flanders Village Historical Society is scheduled for Thursday, February 11, at 7:30 p.m., at the Flanders Mens Club. Members will discuss local history and provide an update about possible Community Preservation Fund acquisitions.
The Board of Trustees of the group would like to thank all members for their support in 2009. Trustees are also hoping that 2010 will be the year that the FVHS takes flight. Special thanks are being sent out to the group’s contributing members: JR Irrigation, Moore Green Inc., Rosemary Herger, James Bond, Liza Skiffington, Karen Camarda, Vincent Roppelt and Gary Cobb. Thanks also go out to the Southampton Town clerk’s office, JoAnn McLean, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lutz, Stephanie Davis, Richard Casabianca, Tiger Gardiner and Liz Strebel for their contributions to the group.
There will be a fund-raiser held next month for “Captain” Bob Monette, a Remsenburg resident who was diagnosed three years ago with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The event, which will be hosted by the “Friends 4 Captain Bob,” is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, at Casey’s on Montauk Highway in Westhampton Beach. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by The Filthy Crickets, and there will be a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.
Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at Lynne’s Cards and Gifts on Main Street and Fox Land Surveying on Sunset Avenue, both in Westhampton Beach, or at A&T Automotive on Windemere Court in Speonk. Visit friends4captbob.com if you need more details. This sounds like a great night out and a great way to help a local family.
So, that is all for this week. I will leave you with another historical fact about our hamlet. From the “South Side Signal, November 20, 1869, Riverhead Record: An attempt to [set] fire [to] the school house at Flanders was unsuccessful. It was discovered before much damage was done.”
I guess the kids back then didn’t like going to school either. Have a great week!
