Salon Series, the Parrish Art Museum’s classical music program featuring world-class pianists performing in an intimate setting. On Friday, May 19, at 6 p.m., pianist Ching-Yun Hu will present a Salon Series program at the Parrish Art Museum titled “Rachmaninoff at 150” — works composed or arranged by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) in celebration of the anniversary of his birth.
The first half of the program includes Rachmaninoff’s well-known and tempestuous Prelude in C Sharp Minor Op. 3 No. 2, followed by the composer’s piano arrangements of “Partita for Violin,” No. 3 in E Major by Johann Sebastian Bach; and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Cradle Song from Six Romances,” Op. 16. The second half is dedicated to Rachmaninoff’s thrilling Études-Tableaux, Op. 39 — performed by only the most virtuosic pianists due to their musical complexity and highly demanding technical challenges, including the accelerated tempi in Preludes No. 1 and No. 6, which also presents dramatic chromatic runs.
A Taiwanese American pianist with an illustrious career, Ching-Yun has performed sold-out concerts on the most prestigious international music stages. She has taken top prizes at the 12th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition and the Concert Artists Guild Competition and has astounded audiences as a soloist across the U.S., Europe, and Asia at venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, Taipei National Concert Hall, and Osaka’s Symphony Hall. Concerto engagements have included performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and Taiwan Philharmonic. In addition to her performing career, Ching-Yun is dedicated to fostering the next generation of musicians as an educator and through entrepreneurial and philanthropic initiatives.
Tickets are $35 ($25 members) and $20 for students at parrishart.org. The Parrish Art Museum is at 279 Montauk Highway, Water Mill.
