Southampton Arts Center will open its second exhibition of the year on April 23. “TECHSPRESSIONISM – Digital & Beyond” will feature the works of more than 90 artists from around the world working in technology. Curated by Colin Goldberg, the exhibition includes a selection of paintings, sculptures, NFTs, video works, animations, installation works and prints. SAC is also partnering with Hamptons Doc Fest for a three-part film festival, Docs Equinox, highlighting the environment for Earth Month. Indigenous films, drawing workshops, wellness, and more will also be presented.

Here’s what’s on deck in April:

Studio @ SAC: Figure Drawing Workshop – Fridays, April 1, 8, 22, 29 at 1 p.m.

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Registration required.

Live: Poetry Night – Friday, April 1, at 6 p.m.

“OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now” poetry evening led by curator Jeremy Dennis and ancillary programming curatorial associate Shane Weeks.

Wellness: Sound Meditation – Saturday, April 2, 16, 30 at 10:30 a.m.

Soothing, deeply relaxing and immersive meditation led by bowl master and meditation DJ Daniel Lauter.

Film: “Te Ata” – Friday, April 8, at 6 p.m.

“Te Ata” (Tay’ Ah-Tah) is based on the inspiring, true story of Mary Thompson Fisher, a woman who traversed cultural barriers to become one of the greatest First American performers of all time. Born in Indian Territory, and raised on the songs and stories of her Chickasaw culture, Te Ata’s journey to find her true calling led her through isolation, discovery, love and a stage career that culminated in performances for a U.S. president, European royalty and audiences across the world. Yet, of all the stories she shared, none are more inspiring than her own. Directed by Nathan Frankowski.

Art: “OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now” Closing Ceremony – Saturday, April 9, at 4 p.m.

“OUTCROPPING – Indigenous Art Now,” curated by Jeremy Dennis, special closing ceremony will feature a presentation from exhibition ancillary programming curatorial associate Shane Weeks. The exhibition will formally close on Sunday, April 10.

Film: Docs Equinox “Bring Your Own Brigade” With Hamptons Doc Fest – Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m.

SAC will screen “Bring Your Own Brigade,” a documentary by two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker. Drawing on hundreds of hours of astonishing wildfire footage and featuring interviews with survivors, firefighters and scientists, the film reveals that short of solving global warming there are numerous, often simple steps that can be taken to not only mitigate the catastrophic devastation caused by wildfires, but restore health and balance to woodlands that have been mismanaged for far too long. Q&A with director Lucy Walker to follow

Film: Docs Equinox “The Velvet Queen” With Hamptons Doc Fest – Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m.

SAC will screen “The Velvet Queen,” a documentary set in the heart of the Tibetan highlands where an award-winning photographer guides a writer in his quest to document the infamously elusive snow leopard. Featuring photographer and co-director Vincent Munier and author Sylvain Tesson. Q&A with ecologist and author Carl Safina to follow.

Art: “TECHSPRESSIONISM – Digital & Beyond Exhibition” Opening Reception –Saturday, April 23, at 6 p.m.

The exhibition, curated by Colin Goldberg, includes the works of over 90 artists working with technology from more than 20 countries around the world. Goldberg and several exhibition artists will be present.

SAC will screen “River,” a cinematic and musical odyssey that explores the remarkable relationship between humans and rivers, narrated by Willem Dafoe. Directed by Jennifer Peedom and Joseph Nizeti.

Live: “TECHSPRESSONISM – Digital & Beyond” Online Reception – Wednesday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m.

Meet “TECHSPRESSIONISM – Digital & Beyond” curator Colin Goldberg and participating exhibition artists during a virtual Techspressionist Salon. Moderated by artist Davonte Bradley, this cyberspace allows for artists to gather, share their work, and discuss matters relating to art and technology.

Southampton Arts Center is located at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton and the galleries are open Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The gallery will begin opening on Thursdays at noon on Thursday, April 21. Learn more and register for events at southamptonartscenter.org or call 631-283-0967.
