Canio’s Cultural Café and Canio’s Books, 290 Main Street in Sag Harbor, will host a series of events over HarborFest weekend – September 12 and September 13 – opening with a discussion with Tulane’s Scott Cowen about the Rebuilding of New Orleans Post Katrina on Friday, September 11 at 6 p.m.
Mr. Cowen, a former president of Tulane, watched Hurricane Katrina devastate New Orleans. When federal, state, and city officials couldn’t find their way to decisive action, Mr. Cowen, known for his gutsy leadership, quickly partnered with a coalition of civic, business, and nonprofit organizations to work around the old institutions and save the community.

“The Inevitable City,” his book about the crisis, outlines the ten principles that effectively helped save New Orleans, and that can be used for other communities struggling in the wake of disaster—whether natural or manmade. Mr. Cowen has written more that a hundred peer-reviewed journal articles and five books. TIME magazine has named President Cowen one of the nation’s Top 10 Best College Presidents in 2009.
Canio’s will continue the weekend’s programming on Saturday, September 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. with Canio’s on the Wharf in the courtyard of Bay Street Theater where author, artist and playwright Jules Feiffer will sign copies of his latest book, “Out of Line,” an illustrated biography, and “Kill My Mother,” a graphic novel by the renowned cartoonist.
On Saturday, September 12 at 5 p.m., Canio’s will return to its Main Street space for “Moral Progress in John Steinbeck’s “Winter of our Discontent,” a presentation by Steinbeck scholar Richard Hart.
The late novel was written while Steinbeck lived in Sag Harbor and is set in the village. Dr. Hart is Cyrus H. Holley Professor of Applied Ethics and Philosophy Humanities Division at Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey. He is currently Vice President for Academic Relations for the International Society of Steinbeck Scholars. Dr. Hart is on the Editorial Board of the Steinbeck Review, and was Keynote Speaker in 2007 for The John Steinbeck Society of Japan. Dr. Hart has authored 10 Steinbeck articles and book chapters in leading journals and book collections; and has lectured on Steinbeck and philosophy at universities and conferences in New York, Massachusetts, Idaho, California, and abroad in Hungary, Spain, Czech Republic, and Romania.
