“Chuck Close: Recent Work” opens at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Saturday, August 10, and will remain on view through October 14.
The exhibit contains approximately two dozen new and recent pieces and includes paintings, archival watercolor pigment prints on Hahnemühle rag paper and jacquard tapestries. All works in the show are portraits of artists and friends, such as Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein, Lou Reed and Kara Walker.
The artist uses unique technique to create large-scale photo-based portrait paintings of the human face. His pieces have been the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions in over 20 countries, including exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Mr. Close is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, which President Bill Clinton bestowed on him in 2000. The artist later painted President Clinton in 2006. He was recently appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. The part-time East End resident of 40 years was also the recipient of the 1995 Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in the Visual Arts.
“Chuck Close: Recent Works” on be on view from Saturday, August 10, through October 14. Art critic Robert Storr will interview Mr. Close on Saturday, August 10, starting at 3 p.m. Afterwards, Guild Hall will host a reception for the exhibit.
