Sag Harbor resident Paul Davis selected The American Hotel as his subject for the “Barfly” exhibition at Milan’s Galleria Nuages. The show coincides with Bookcity Milan, a city-wide festival promoting reading, books and libraries.
“American Hotel” is a three-dimensional assemblage of the artist’s own photograph of the bar, stones and seashells collected locally, a fragment of a recent Davis poster with seagulls, a cigar box provided by proprietor and restaurateur Ted Conklin, and other memorabilia.
Gallerist Cristina Taverna, who conceived the exhibition and invited 20 artists to participate, said a book also is in the works. The show and book will be “a sort of visionary voyage or illustrated tour” of cafes and bars around the world which have attracted notable writers and artists, past and present. Galleria Nuages is located in Milan.
Other creative hangouts represented include Les Deux Magots in Paris, Antico Caffe Greco in Rome, Caffe la Brasileira in Lisbon, Caffe Florian in Venice, the White Horse Tavern in New York, Grand Cafe Odeon in Zurich, Bar Jamaica in Milan, the Elephant House in Edinburgh, and Kennedy’s in Dublin.
Mr. Davis’s work has been widely exhibited in solo gallery exhibitions and museum retrospectives in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
