Canio's Cultural Cafe is sponsoring another community-wide marathon reading of the great American classic, Herman Melville's “Moby-Dick.” The novel mentions Sag Harbor in its early pages and illustrates, in a dramatic and captivating narrative, the compelling themes of whaling in the mid-19th century.
The event will take place at five village locations, with community members invited to participate in the reading. Film, stage and television actor Harris Yulin will be the leadoff reader at the opening bell, at Canio's on June 9 at 11 a.m. Several local newspapers, including The Sag Harbor Express, The Southampton Press and Dan's Papers have formed teams of reporters to read during the three-day event.
Melville aficionado Lisa Dickman, will present “Herman Melville: the Modern Master,” an introduction to the great American writer on May 20 at 5 p.m., as a warm up for this year’s Moby-Dick marathon and the 1957 classic film “Moby Dick” with Gregory Peck will be screened at the John Jermain Memorial Library on June 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Readings will begin on June 9 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Canio’s, from 12:30 to 3:45 p.m. at the Old Whaler’s Church and again at Canio’s from 4 to 10 p.m.
On June 10, readings continue at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum from 10 to 1:50 p.m., at the John Jermain Memorial Library from 2 to 5:45 p.m. and back at Canio’s from 6 to 10 p.m.
On June 11, gather at the Eastville Community & Historical Society from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and at Canio’s for the after party from 1:30 to 4 p.m. To register to read a chapter, send an email with the date and time period you are available to caniosculturalcafe@gmail.com with “MDM reader” as subject.
