Since it will be a while before traveling the globe will return, Montauk Library is hosting a virtual “Armchair Travel Book Club.” The club meets the third Tuesday of the month from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Zoom and is moderated by Carolyn Balducci, the library’s adult programs coordinator.
The next book to be discussed on Tuesday, February 16, will be “My Life in France” (2006) By Julia Child. This is Child’s memoir of her years in France where she fell in love with French food. From the moment she and her husband arrived in the fall of 1948, Julia had an awakening. Soon this tall, outspoken Californian, who didn’t speak a word of French and knew nothing about the country, dove into French culture, and her life changed forever.
Child’s unforgettable story — struggles with the head of the Cordon Bleu, rejections from publishers, a wonderful, nearly 50-year marriage — unfolds with the spirit that was key to her success as a chef and a writer, brilliantly capturing one of America’s most endearing personalities.
Other titles to be discussed in the book club include:
March 16: “The Bells of Old Tokyo” by Anna Sherman
April 20: “Travels with Charley: In Search of America” by John Steinbeck
May 18: “The Buried: An Archaeology of the Egyptian Revolution” by Peter Kessler
June 15: “Barbarian Days: a Surfing Life” by William Finnegan
To sign up for the book club, email Balducci at cbalducci@montauklibrary.org with “Armchair Travel Book Club” in the subject line. Zoom invitations will be sent to members of the group a day or two ahead of time.
