Music for Montauk (M4M) will feature the American String Quartet on October 1 at 5 p.m. in the Montauk Public School auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The internationally recognized string quartet, which celebrated 40 years in 2014, will perform a concert with pieces by Haydn and Beethoven and a new piece titled “American Pilgrimage” by Robert Sirota, which is dedicated to the memory of Ruth Widder. Haydn’s string quartet in G Major (Opus 76, No. 1) balances tradition and innovation, and Beethoven’s Quartet in C Major (Opus 59, No. 3) earned the nickname “Eroica” because of its impressive finale.

Robert Sirota’s “American Pilgrimage” is inspired by the beauty, pathos, and variety of both our geography and culture in places like Maine, South Carolina, New Mexico and New York.

“Foremost in my mind in composing this work was to capture a vision of the epic quality of our country – the awesome diversity of its landscape and its people,” Mr. Sirota said.
