Vocal music serves as the inspiration behind Nadejda Vlaeva’s upcoming performance on Friday, October 19, at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, as part of its Salon Series concerts.
The international award-winning pianist’s program will begin with two compositions by Franz Schubert based on the composer’s vocal works: “Serenade,” from his song cycle “Schwanengesang,” or “Swan Song,” transcribed for solo piano by Franz Liszt; and “Wanderer Fantasy in C Major, Op. 15,” based on the art song “The Wanderer,” which is considered Schubert’s most technically demanding piano composition for the piano.
Following a brief intermission, Vlaeva will play two works by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky — “Dumka in C minor, Op. 59” and “Chant elegiaque, Op. 72 No. 14” — and conclude with “Réminiscences de Don Juan, S. 418,” the opera fantasy for piano by Polish-born composer Franz Liszt, based on themes from Mozart's “Don Giovanni.”
Guest pianist Rosalia Malik, who is Vlaeva's daughter, will also perform “Fantaisie Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. 66” by Frédéric Chopin and “Toccata” by Vitali Filippenko.
“Salon Series creates an interactive environment for master musicians of classical and contemporary music to share their performances in new ways,” Corinne Erni, senior curator of special projects and arts reach, said in a press release. “The audience is invited to engage in a dialogue with the musicians and learn more about their creative process and program choices.”
The concert will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and $10 for members. For more information, call (631) 283-2118 or visit parrishart.org.
