Often called a “black comedy about white trash,” directors Michael Disher and Joan Lyons will bring Del Shores’ “Sordid Lives: A Comedy in Four Chapters” to the Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center January 14 through January 31.
Three generations of a family in a small Texas town gather for the funeral of their elderly family matriarch, whose death occurred during a clandestine meeting in a seedy motel. As preparations ensue, theatergoers learn the hilarious, sad and trashy truth of this dysfunctional family. Some elements of the play come directly from Mr. Shores’ life. “Sordid Lives” is not only a stage play but was also a film and a short-lived TV series featuring Delta Burke, Beau Bridges and Olivia Newton-John. The original play premiered in Los Angeles in 1996 and won 14 Drama-Logue Awards. It has since become a notable and quotable cult classic.
The cast for “Sordid Lives” includes Tom Gregory, Edward Kassar, John Leonard, Deborah Marshall, Joseph Marshall, JoAnna Mincarelli, Mary Sabo, Frances Sherman, Danielle Shuman, Kristin Whiting, Gerri Wilson, Scott Wilson.
Thursday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. All performances are in Southampton Cultural Center’s Levitas Center for the Arts, located on Pond Lane directly across from Agawam Park.
