“Three Roads Three Artists,” an art exhibition featuring local artists Kirsten Benfield, Kurt Giehl and Daniel Vernola, will be held at Ashawagh Hall in Springs from Monday, August 12, through Thursday, August 15. A reception will be held on Thursday, August 15, from 5 to 9 p.m.
“Three Roads Three Artists” is taking place where three roads converge in Springs and three artists come together to present a collection of oil paintings and watercolors that explores a “place between.”
Kirsten Benfield is originally from New Zealand living and working in East Hampton. As a traveler, observation of her travels has been recorded in watercolor. "In exploring my sense of place on the East End, I bring the two places together in landscapes, and mind-scapes,” said Ms. Benfield who has developed her own style that is now heavily influenced with texture, structure and memories.
Kurt Giehl is an artist residing in East Hampton. A painter, he uses a combination of oil and acrylics. After a successful 23 years on Wall Street, Mr. Giehl decided to leave his financial career and pursue his passion for art full time. His seascape paintings are intended to induce a level of calm and tranquility while his abstracts explore the process of applying paint through more non-traditional methods. Using an array of self-built tools and palette knives, Mr. Giehl smears paint across the canvas to render organic color combinations and form.
Daniel Vernola works in New York City as an arts educator and is a member of the Art Students League. He has studied and exhibited internationally, and currently maintains a studio in Amagansett. His work is abstract expressionist and the East End’s quiet hamlets are his jumping off point.
“Knowledge of the craft of painting is being lost so it is important to understand it. My painting seeks a new identity ... the idea they are representations is a lie,” Mr. Vernola said. “My art seeks to leave this earth and make an entirely new world.”
Ashawagh Hall is at 780 Springs Fireplace Road in Springs.
