Two groups of local painters — The Wednesday Group/Plein Air Painters of the East End and water+color+works — come together under one roof for a quintessential exhibition of bucolic local landscapes. On view from June 19 through 30 at The Depot Art Gallery, located at the Montauk train station, the show opens on Saturday, June 21, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. with live music in the upstairs studio.
The Wednesday Group formed about 15 years ago when Frank Sofo, in partnership with Gene Samuelson, wanted to create an inclusive plein-air painting group, with artistic abilities from beginners to advanced. They contacted artists and a small group formed to meet once a week at some of the many beautiful locations on the East End. A schedule was given from early spring to late fall. The decision was made to meet midweek, so they were called The Wednesday Group, Plein-Air Painters of the East End. The group has expanded over the years to more than 20 artists. Featured in the show are: Agnes Bristel-Soethoudt, Johanna Caleca, Teresa Lawler, Marie Lombardi, Jean Mahoney, Kathy Milliken, Deborah Palmer, Bob Sullivan, Aurelio Torres, Maureen Travers and Diane White.
The water+color+works group explores the watercolor medium to its fullest and most beautiful with varying subject matter. Unofficially called “The Tuesday Group,” this small, dedicated group of watercolor artists meets weekly to paint, inspire each other, and create beautiful works on paper. Their styles and subject matter differ, but they all have one thing in common: the love of the medium. Featured artists from the group in this show are: Kirsten Benfield, Nancy Brody, Barbara DiLorenzo, Laurie Hall, Beth Meredith, Janet Rojas, Jerry Schwabe and Carol Sigler.
The Depot Art Gallery is located at Flamingo Avenue and Edgemere Street in Montauk. The gallery is open Thursdays through Mondays, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit montaukartistsassociation.org.
