Tripoli Gallery will present “Emoji Portraits,” its second solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based creator, Yung Jake. Featuring digital paintings ranging from 2015 to today, this is the first presentation of his world-renowned emoji portraits in hard copy.

On view July 14 through August 14, a public reception will be held for the artist on July 15 from 7 to 9 p.m., with an after-party to follow.

Jake touches back to his core as a painter. Aware of modern day technologies and unbound to any particular medium, his work is constantly evolving. Drawing since he was a child, he began a series of self-portraits while attending the Bridgehampton School. Incorporating digital technology, his emoji portraits showcase the same painterly skills he developed painting portraits in his formative years.

His company, Tig.ht Corp., co-founded with partner Vince McKelvie developed emoji.ink, which allows its users to paint with emojis.

From the movie cameras speckling Leo’s jacket, to rabbits on Bowie’s face and green plants ornamenting Willow Smith’s forehead, each painting is a fusion of diverse emojis, that recreates the unique pulse of its subject.

Jake earned his BFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2012. His emoji portraits have been featured in print in Time Magazine and online by Creators Project, WNYC, Wired, Artnet News, Business Insider, BBC News, Complex and the Fader.

He has had 10 solo exhibitions since 2014, including five shows at Steve Turner in Los Angles and his previous solo show with Tripoli Gallery, “Twisted Metal.”

Tripoli Gallery is located at 30a Jobs Lane in Southampton, open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesday and open Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. For more information, please contact info@tripoligallery.com or (631) 377-3715.
