Responsible Holiday

Instead of traveling over rivers or through woods, many of us rush off to Black Friday sales and a frenzy of shopping for gifts, decorating and feasting. Now we are starting to realize the consequence of holiday excess. This past Thanksgiving, approximately 204 million pounds of turkey meat went to waste — a staggering statistic when one in every eight Americans struggles with hunger. Americans also throw away 25 percent more garbage between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than at any other time of the year. Here are some suggestions for a successful — and sustainable — holiday season with ... by Staff Writer

Sag Harbor Firehouse Grant Will Be Directed to Fireboat Instead

The Sag Harbor Fire Department, which has been raising money to buy a state-of-the-art fireboat, has found a significant portion of that funding by re-purposing a $250,000 state grant originally intended to be used for the renovation and expansion of the Sag Harbor Firehouse. Trustee Tom Gardella, who is a former chief and remains an active member in the department, estimated that a fireboat will cost approximately $650,000. With the grant, a private pledge of $100,000 and $80,000 raised with the Sag Harbor Partnership at a summertime community party, a total of $430,000 has been raised. Mature Leadership

Post-election analysis indicates that, on Long Island, crime was a major issue that led to Democrats’ defeat. (I need to note that our congressional candidate, Bridget Fleming, carried Southampton Town.) Surely, the first thing Republican Congressman Jim Jordan, reputed to be the incoming chair of the House of Representatives Justice Committee, would do would be to provide insight into Republican plans for crime fighting. However, according to all reports I’ve read, Jim Jordan’s main goal is to begin investigations, possibly leading to impeachment hearings targeting President Joe Biden and various Biden administration cabinet members. That probably won’t improve street crime ... by Staff Writer

Adults in the Room

This week, Nancy Pelosi passed the torch of her role as speaker of the House and leader of the Democrats in Congress to her handpicked deputies. Like all good leaders, she considered her legacy and did what she needed to do to ensure it by seamlessly enacting a succession plan. Nancy intends that the Democratic Party will be distinguished from the Republican Party by being the adults in the room. Republicans will undoubtedly continue in chaos with purposeless investigations and conspiracy theories. Instead, Nancy’s Democratic Party will minimize the infighting and deal with the business at hand — the people’s ... by Staff Writer
