Dear Ms. Beechnut

Dear Ms. Beechnut (a symbol of strength, beauty and endurance for the ages):

It is with great sadness that we, the Shinnecock, write this letter to you. We hope that you can forgive those who aim to harm you.

The corporate and political forces of National Grid and the village are in the process of killing you without just cause. They are tearing away the earth that has protected you for more than 300 years, and your roots are being exposed to things they do not understand. Electrical waves and gas fumes are shocking your nervous system and poisoning you, while they say their actions will do you no harm.

It was a noble thing that Mayor Bill Manger did when he declared you a Heritage Tree on Dr. Martin Luther King Day [“Southampton Village Designates More Than 300-Year-Old Beech as Heritage Tree,” 27east.com, January 17]. Whether or not that action was purely political or, combined with the power of prayer, a true blessing will soon be seen. If the Shinnecock had not heard your cries, would anyone have helped you?

Ms. Beechnut, the Shinnecock know what you would say (and we hope all can hear your words): “I am no ordinary tree. I have witnessed over 300 years of history. I stand proudly at the East Gate of the Shinnecock Nation as a symbol of strength, beauty and endurance.”

Ms. Beechnut, we hope that you shall stand for another 300 years.

Serena Lee
