Height Of Hypocrisy

In the March 26 edition of The East Hampton Press, I read with great interest the article titled “Restaurants Hope To Persevere” [“Week Two Of Restaurant Shutdowns Brings Reason For Hope For Some,” 27east.com, March 24]. During this unprecedented crisis, I share the concerns of many regarding the financial struggles of the small-business owner and employees who are the lifeblood for all restaurants. Without these employees, the restaurants would not exist.

However, it is the height of hypocrisy when the owners of a “high-end” restaurant in Sag Harbor, where entrées cost between $30 and $40, feel compelled to start a Go Fund Me page for their employees, and for themselves, a mere two weeks after this stay-at-home procedure began.

In this particular instance, the owners of the restaurant are a wealthy couple, a successful businessman and the daughter of a top designer. They are also the owners of a $5 million oceanfront property.

Shouldn’t they have enough resources to support their employees during this downturn? And maybe we should save Go Fund Me for people who are not connected to wealthy benefactors.
