Raymond R. Valcich Sr., first a part-time childhood resident and then a 45-year resident of Montauk, died on January 23 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He was 83.
Born June 19, 1926, in Manhattan to Mitchell Valcich and Milka (née Martinovich) Valcich, he attended William Cullen Bryant High School, graduating in 1944. After returning from service in the U.S. Army during World War II, he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kent State University in New York City in 1950.
His father was a property owner in Montauk, where Mitchell Dunes Lane was named for his father.
While living in Queens he owned and operated Servol Motors on Queens Boulevard. Also a New York State certified real estate broker, he settled in Montauk where he sold modular homes and owned and operated Four Oaks Motel & Cottages, Oasis Motel & Marina and Pizza Pier Restaurant, all in Montauk, in the early 1970s until the 1980s. He established the family business, Montauk Services, a general repair shop, with his sons in the 1980s. In the early 1990s, he moved to Morrisville, Vermont, where he established Talord’s Tavern & Restaurant. Never fully retired, upon returning to Montauk he worked for his children’s business, Mickey’s Carting and Emergency Mechanical Services, and was a full-time babysitter of his granddaughter, known affectionately as “Catarina Ballerina.”
He was a member of the Montauk Point Lions Club, the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and a retired member of the Montauk Fire Department and Ambulance Company.
He is survived by two daughters, Nora Franzetti and Lisa Valcich, both of Montauk; three sons, Raymond “Gig” Valcich, Richard Valcich and Mitchell “Mickey” Valcich, all of Montauk; five granddaughters, Catherine, Meghan, Carin, Laura and Catherine “Catarina Ballerina;” and two grandsons, Tyler and Joshua. His wife, Margaret Valcich, predeceased him.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 28, and Friday, January 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. both days, at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 30, at 11 a.m., at St. Therese of Lisieux in Montauk. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Cemetery in Montauk.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Montauk Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, Dominican Sisters Family Health Services, Friends of the Montauk Medical Center or the Montauk Point Lions Club would be appreciated by the family.
