Auditions Are Held for ‘Mary Poppins’

Auditioning plays a big part in putting on a musical. At the beginning of the month, Springs School’s junior high students auditioned for the musical “Mary Poppins.”

Science teacher Sondra Vecchio, art teacher Laura Marino and music teacher Dylan Greene are the directors of the school musical.

The auditions took place in the school’s music room, as well as in the small gym. Being in a musical helps students express themselves and learn how to act and sing.

During auditions, the students were directed to stand up in front of the other actors and sing by themselves or with a group. They needed to sing the song “A Spoon Full of Sugar” from the original film produced in 1964.

On the second day of auditions, students read lines from various scenes in “Mary Poppins” and took turns acting out different roles.

One of the directors who cast the play said, “It was difficult casting the play. Everyone who came out for the musical was great, and we wanted to make sure everyone got a role that suited them.”

Sixth-grader Alexa Salcedo Rivas said, “I felt very nervous while auditioning.” She then explained that sixth-graders don’t usually get lead parts, but she feels good about getting a supporting role.

The school is very excited to be hosting “Mary Poppins.” The cast and crew hope to see you there later in the winter. Details about the performance will be featured in an article as the date draws near.
