U.S. Coast Guard officers evacuated a 50-year-old man from a fishing boat near Montauk Point on Sunday afternoon due to a health emergency. He died later that evening. A fire that broke out at East Hampton Indoor Tennis last week is being investigated as arson after evidence of an accelerant was found at the scene. At 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, the East Hampton Fire Department was called to an automatic fire alarm at the office building for East Hampton Indoor Tennis at 174 Daniels Hole Road near the East Hampton Airport. An Amagansett home caught fire on Saturday morning, and fire officials suspect it was sparked by lightning striking the roof of the house.Amagansett Fire Chief William Beckert said a 6:38 a.m. call reported smoke in the area of Cross Highway, prompting firefighters to investigate. Chief Beckert said that while the volunteers were on route, they were informed that the smoke was the result of a roof fire. A recreational boat caught fire and sank near Gardiners Island on Friday.According to Senior Chief Eric Best, officer in charge at the Coast Guard Montauk station, the incident took place sometime after 2 p.m. south of Gardiners Island and to the west of Cartwright Shoal. Mr. Best said that three people were on board the vessel before they abandoned it and were taken to safety to Accabonac Harbor by a Good Samaritan.
