The Only Way?

I think it is truly wonderful that local pilots have stepped in to rescue 15 puppies from a South Carolina shelter [“Local Pilots Help ARF Rescue 15 Puppies From Death Sentences,” 27east.com, December 22]. Besides the humanitarian aspects of the rescue, adoptable puppies are in very short supply these days, and I am confident that these dogs will find loving homes in the Hamptons.

But, that said, I feel compelled to respond to pilot Charles Canavan’s comment on the mission: “This isn’t a one-time thing … These trips are going to keep happening. They’re one of the million reasons why we need [to] keep this airport alive.”

Is the rescue of 15 puppies really worth the constant disruption to the lives of thousands of East End residents? Was this truly the only way to get them here? For example, couldn’t they have been flown to Islip and driven the last 60 miles?

And, I would be very curious to know the route Mr. Canavan took in heading to the airport. My guess would be that, like most pilots these days, he flew the November Route: along the ocean to the Shinnecock Canal, up the canal to Peconic Bay, across the bay to the North Sea area, then straight across North Sea, Noyac and Sag Harbor to the airport.

If this were such a wonderful reason to keep the airport alive, wouldn‘t it also be wonderful to use East Hampton airspace for flights like this and the other “critical infrastructure” uses referenced in the article?
