Tone It Down

An issue is on the agenda that will affect everyone in Sag Harbor in myriad ways: night vision, community character, flora and fauna, human health, and the view of the night sky.

There is a project to change all the streetlights to LEDs, which is a way to save energy; however, LEDs are very high in blue light waves, which is detrimental to our environment and our health, producing more glare and skyglow, and impairing night vision.

It is important to use LEDs with the lowest “Kelvin” (less blue), at 2200 Kelvin, which is close in color to traditional light bulbs and will save energy over the current streetlights.

Right now, Sag Harbor may be scheduled to partner with East Hampton — and in East Hampton, the project by New York Power Authority has a Kelvin rating that is too high: 2700.

Please contact the East Hampton Town Board and the Sag Harbor Village mayor and trustees to request the proper LED for the streetlight conversion, similar to the Town of Pepperell, at 2200 Kelvin. Otherwise, we will have to live with LED streetlights that will change the character of our towns for a long time to come.
