Eighty-five years ago Gone With the Wind made movie history by garnering eight academy awards and going on to become the highest grossing movie of all time. Three years earlier, however, the over 1,000 page historical epic by journalist Margaret Mitchell on which it was based made literary history by winning the National Book Award (1936), the Pulitzer Prize (1937), and selling over 38 million copies in close to 40 countries - a huge critical and commercial success. It was -- and still is -- one of the most remarkable sagas ever written about our country at its most divisive time and has much to suggest in this pre-election period as we confront the persistence of regional politics, race, class, and ideology in determining the future of America as a united states.
