By Map and by Letter, Southampton Town in 1797

Description:

In 1797 word came down from New York State's surveyor general, Simeon
DeWitt, that an Act of the Legislature had required new maps of all towns in the state be drawn. Learn how Southampton Supervisor David Hedges responded with a hand drawn map and detailed letter of the Town, describing everything from schoolhouses, to churches, to industry, to wildlife and the Port of Sag Harbor. Southampton Town Historian Julie Greene will give this fascinating lecture.
