The South Fork is about the beach — and from its start as an English settlement, public access to the waterfront was protected, allowing for both leisure and enterprise. Recent court rulings, and ongoing battles over vehicles on the beach at places like Truck Beach in East Hampton and the Picnic Area in Southampton Village, have begun to assail the long-held right of public beach access in favor of waterfront property owners’ rights. Will these battles lead to a major change that forever changes year-round life on the East End’s beaches?
