October’s performance of The Jazz Loft @ Southampton Concert Series entitled “The Art & Soul of Rhythm & Blues” looks at how Jazz, born from the blues, has been a distinctive voice of American culture by capturing the soundtrack of the victories and struggles of generations of people. Always inclusive, Jazz has taken in so many styles of music from country, western, swing, music traditions from the Black church, gospel, various Latin influences, as well as many technological advances, which have changed the direction and sound of the music.
Celebrated performers appearing in “The Art & Soul of Rhythm & Blues” include vocalist Joy Brown, tenor saxophone player Dayna Sean Stephens, pianist Miki Hayama, drummer Darrell Smith, and bassist Dean Johnson.
