Pop is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s. It started in the United Kingdom but really caught on as a movement in NY with artists like Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. It draws inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture. Two of our featured pop stars, Russell Young and Nelson De La Nuez have followed in the footsteps of Warhol and Johns exploring their own version of Pop. And they have reached the pinnacle. Russell through photography with iconic portraits, later accentuated with diamond dust and Nelson through painting and mixed media. Seek One is the emerging artist in the trio with his own interpretation of popular culture mixed with graffiti. We could have just featured Russell and Nelson but we thought it was important to show the generational impact of the pop movement because without the influx of talent a movement does not move. In curating this exhibit we wanted to use POP not only as an art movement but as a metaphor, thus selecting pieces that would visually jump off the gallery walls. Pop is loved because Pop delivers. It's engaging. Nostalgic. Cool. As well as a celebration of life, history and color. That said, Russell's signature black and white with diamond dust is a sight to behold.
