SOFO: Forest to Salt Marsh Walk

Description:

Walk Leader: Melanie Meade , South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) Education & Outreach Coordinator

At the trailhead is a butterfly garden. This roughly 1.5mile trail winds through shrublands and an old oak forest that ends with views of the Long Island Sound. Along the way is Inlet Pond, a freshwater pond with an interpretive observation platform complete with seats for wildlife watching. In summer, Herons and egrets forage for bullfrog tadpoles at the water’s edge while Red-winged Blackbirds and Tree Swallows make their nests in the overhanging trees. In the fall, migrating water birds use the pond as a rest stop on their journey southward.
