SoMAS Southampton Lecture Series

Description:

On Friday, March 6th at 7:30pm, Melinda Conners, Senior Postdoctoral Associate School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University will present a lecture titled: “Advancing the Design of Marine Protected Areas to Safeguard Marine Megafauna in a Changing Climate”
in the Duke Lecture Hall of Chancellor’s Hall on the Stony Brook Southampton Campus.

The abstract of the talk appears below. We hope to see you there!

With multiple global initiatives calling for the protection of 10-30% of the global oceans by 2030, marine protected areas (MPAs) are rapidly increasing in number. MPAs are designed to conserve critical habitats of marine species, but can they effectively protect highly mobile and migratory species, like sharks, turtles, birds, and whales that cover vast distances across the oceans? This talk will explore the latest developments in MPAs and other spatial management tools that intend to safeguard marine megafauna populations now and in a future of climate change.

When:

Fri, Mar 6, 2020 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Where:

  • Stony Brook Southampton
  • 239 Montauk Highway, Southampton, NY, USA
