What Is, What Was and What Could Be : The Solo exhibition of Mayowa Nwadike For Immediate Release: May 21, 2024
The Southampton African American Museum is ecstatic to present to the public the debut solo exhibition of Mayowa Nwadike entitled “What Is, What Was and What Could Be”! This exhibition speaks to Nwadike’s personal journey as an artist and as a man, learning that acceptance is the key to true liberation and freedom.
Nwadike is a Nigerian born artist who conveys human emotion through highly detailed portraiture mixing mediums -charcoal and acrylic paints- and using classical techniques in doing so. The subjects he paints blur the lines of feminine and masculine energy, capturing the nonbinary effortlessly in regality, representing the world and the humans that walk its terrain in all its varying hues and colors and offering inclusivity for all representations and identities.
The open ended phrase “What is, What Was and What could be” offers all the opportunity to embark on a mission of self discovery. What Is - Acceptance of the reality we currently exist in, What Was - Acceptance of the past experiences we’ve endured and conquered while simultaneously gleaning the knowledge of those lived experiences (and how those knowledge informs both the present and the future) and What Could Be - Acceptance of the bright future that awaits, brimming with excitement and ever evolving possibilities.
