By the end of World War II Long Island had become a nationally recognized manufacturing and innovation hub for the military. At the same time a rapidly growing middle-class population was faced with Cold War conflict and fears of potential nuclear fallout. Veteran journalist Karl Grossman and historian Christopher Verga, co-authors of “Cold War, Long Island,” will share such Cold War developments as the placement of nuclear-tipped missile bases, in eastern Suffolk in Westhampton and Rocky Point, with warheads with the power and more of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima that were to detonate amid feared formations of Soviet bombers overhead, and the opening on Plum Island, a mile-and-a-half off Orient Point, of an Army laboratory with its original mission developing biological warfare agents to kill livestock in the Soviet Union.
