Tour of the Leiber Collection─ Highlighting Nature: This program is for adults and teens.
Tour Leader: Docent from the Leiber Collection
SOFO is pleased to offer a tour of the Leiber Collection. Judith Leiber, whose work is on view here, frequently used natural motifs in her magnificent clutch bags. As the Wall Street Journal said about her work: “A BUNDLE OF ASPARAGUS stalks. A Ganesh elephant. A Russian nesting doll. A sleeve of french fries. A penguin wearing a top hat. Long before we used emojis, handbag designer Judith Leiber transformed animals, vegetables and definitely the occasional mineral into conversation pieces in clutch form. They were regularly embraced by celebrities, museums like the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the highest society, including many a first lady, both Democrat and Republican….”
Judith Leiber’s exquisite nature-inspired clutch bags, and the paintings and prints of her celebrated, modernist-artist husband, Gerson Leiber, are on display at the museum. Find out more about this couple’s life and their work on this special, SOFO tour.
